Cederberg History

Did you know the name ‘’Cederberg’’ comes from the Clanwilliam Cedar Tree (Widdringtonia cedarbergensis), an extremely rare and endemic tree of the region which typically grows at an altitude of 1 500 metres. Its wood is fine-grained and very beautiful when it was worked properly. However European settlement almost led to the complete destruction of the cedar trees with thousands being used for furniture and housing, even telegraph poles. The Ceder tree is now strictly protected with only isolated trees to be seen in hard-to-reach locations.

Nieuwoudville History

When the town of Nieuwoudtville was founded in 1897, on land that was purchased from H.C. Nieuwoudt, after whom the town is named, the fine old buildings were fashioned from sandstone.  Many of these homes still exist today.

Travelers Rest History

The name, Traveller’s Rest emanated from passing travellers who used to span out here next to the river to give water to their horses and oxen, as well as to rest, before tackling the very steep Pakhuis Pass to the West, or the dry Karoo to the North-East.  This was long before the self-catering cottages and restaurant were built.

We leave Cape Town on Friday morning over the beautiful Bainskloof pass to Ceres. From Ceres we head up Gydo Pass to Op die Berg where we refuel before we head into the hear of the Cederberg.

After refueling we head towards the famous Cederberg Oasis and en route we will cross various passes like Blinkberg, Varkkloof and Grootrivierhoogte. We do a quick stop at Cederberg Oasis for something cold.

From Oasis we head further north and eventually down the Uikykpass and past Algeria all the way yo Clanwilliam. From here we head over Pakhuis Pass to our place of lodging at Travelers Rest

On Saturday we explore further up north to Nieuwoudtville. We ride up two beautiful passes, Klipfonteinrand and Botterkloof. In Nieuwoudtville we allow you some time to visit the motorcycle museum  where a great collection of bikes can be seen.

We then head out for a visit to Nieuwoudtville waterfall and Quiver tree plantation and after lunch we head back to Travelers Rest for a fun filled evening.

After breakfast we make our way back to Cape Town riding some stunning back roads and farm roads from Clanwilliam through the Swartland.
