Kamieskroon Bike Tour

Kamieskroon in the Northern Cape must be the best kept secret in Adventure Biking.

The contrast of the landscape from Hondeklipbaai in the West to Kamasies on the edge of Boesmanland in the East will just blow your mind! Pictures don’t do justice to the scenery in this area and riding your bike here is a must for every adventure biker.

Situated just South of Springbok, Kamieskroon is set among the granite rock formations of the Kamiesberg range in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.  Kamieskroon’s origins lie in the 1860s, 7km north of its present position. It took the name Bowesville (later Bowesdorp), after the district surgeon, Dr Henry Bowe.

As there was little room to expand in the narrow kloof the town occupied, the church council decided, in 1924, to rebuild it at Kamieskroon. Kamies might derive from the Nama word ‘kam’, meaning two – referring to the twin peaks of the mountain. The ‘kroon’, a 330m peak crowned with a huge, cleft rock, is a kilometre from the village.

Leliefontein Methodist Church and Parsonage – Both national monuments in Namakwa’s oldest village. In 1902 Boer leader Manie Maritz massacred members of the Leliefontein mission community that were suspected of being British sympathisers.

Lt DJ Darter’s Grave – The grave of a British officer killed during the Anglo-Boer War, Darter’s grave – 15km south of the town – is the smallest piece of foreign land registered in South Africa, in an area that saw many skirmishes during the war.

This year we add a bit of a twist to the tour by adding an extra day. We leave Cape Town on Wednesday morning around 11:00 from Malmesbury giving everyone ample time to arrive.

Our route take us via back and farm roads through the Swartland doing mostly dirt. The route is a scenic one with some good dirt riding.  From Citrusdal we ride all along the river and past Clanwilliam and Bulshoek dam till we reach our overnight spot at Nama Bike Camp.

Nama Bike Camp is a great place to relax around the fire and even dash into the pool of you feel like it. The evening we will be treated to an awesome braai while we have a great time around the camp fire.

We add another twist to the ussual route. This year we enter Kamieskroon from a different direction via Lutzville, Kotzesrus and Bethalsklip. The route is mostly dirt until we reach Kamieskroon

We check in at the Kamieskroon Hotel which will be home for the next few days

The Kamieskroon area offers a lot of ridding and its impossible to explain the routes we will take every day.

One of the days we will head to the coast and Hondeklipbaai it all depends on the weather and normally the hottest day is the one we head for the coast. There are various old passes in the area that we will ride like Wildepaardehoek pass, Killians pass, Messel Pass and Kamiesberg Pass to name but a view.

Routes will be briefed every morning.
