Long before Gourikwa had a name, it was home to the indigenous people of South Africa. Archaeologists believe that the Khoikhoi were the builders of the fishtraps along the coast, some dating back 4000 years. These can be found among the boulders beyond the chapel.
As settlers moved into the interior during the 1700’s, farms were established along the coast. It had been a very isolated farming community until the late 70’s.
In 1932, the coast was placed on the map, when the SS Haliartus ran aground on the rocks at Yztervarkfontein. Cyanide for mining purposes was part of the very rich cargo. The leaked cyanide created havoc along the coast, killing fish, dolphins and all other sea life in the vicinity. A full report of the wreck can be found in the book Shipwrecks and Salvage in South Africa by Malcolm Turner.
In 1964 a lighthouse was established on the rocky outcrop on the southwestern border of the reserve, called Ystervarkpunt. The steel structure was replaced by a concrete one in 2006. It stands 51m tall and is one of the youngest lighthouses in the country with the official GPS: 34 23’ 26” S / 21 43’ 05” E.
The estate was proclaimed a private nature reserve in 1995. It is the largest private nature reserve along the entire South African coastline. It extends over 2455 hectares (6066 acres) and stretches 5 km along the Indian Ocean. The reserve is fully fenced along its 15 km perimeter and only accessible via two gated entrances.
A walk up Buffelskop (212 m – the highest point on the reserve) offers a magnificent view of the entire coastline, the light house and a vast undulating inland landscape.
We leave Cape Town on Saturday morning and head for Gourikwa Reserve. Our route will be a combination of tar and dirt via Worcestor, Robertson, Bonniedale, Swellendam, Heidelberg and then straight to Gourikwa Reserve.
The focus of the year end tour is to celebrate a year of great adventures with our riders and their partners. Its more about the venue and the celebration than the route. We therefore aim to have you at Gourikwa no later than 15:00 which will give you lots of time to explore the venue and the area or if you prefer, just put your feet up and have a cold one.
The evening will be festive so pack your party shoes!!!
That being said we will make sure that the route still have some of the typical WAVOLT route characteristics!
Another year of tours with WAVOLT is coming to an end as this is our final goodbyes for 2019 before everyone heads off to enjoy the festive season.
After breakfast we say our final goodbyes for 2019 and head back to Cape Town. We always take an interesting route for those that don’t want to be home early.
We have acquired our own tour bus in 2019. It allows us to carry 10 additional passengers in a fully air-conditioned bus. The bus provides the perfect tour along for partners who don’t want to ride on the bike but want to be part of the adventure. There is no additional cost to go on the bus you only pay the normal tour fee for your partner.
Gourikwa have various accommodation options. The most popular will definitely be the 5 units close to the beach and main reception. Accommodation will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.
