The fortunes of Middelpos were built on the trading store established by Daniel Tomlinson after purchasing a portion of the farm Stinkkuil from a local farmer in 1860. After his death, the Sher family purchased the trading store, building it into a successful enterprise servicing the needs of the farming community a far afield as the Tankwa Karoo, Sutherland, Calvinia and Williston.

The Sher family, of Jewish Lithuanian extraction, were part of a widely dispersed community of Jewish traders that played a very important role in establishing commercial enterprises in many remote Karoo towns in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Middelpos Current Day

The tiny village of Middelpos is situated almost equidistant between Sutherland and Calvinia on the R354 and remains probably one of the most authentic Karoo villages in its isolation and remoteness.

The centre of the village consists of a very wide gravel road that dog-legs around the appropriately named Die Winkel or The Shop, the answer to retail therapy in this part of the Roggeveld Karoo.

Around the corner from Die Winkel is the Middelpos Hotel, which is a very comfortable retro Karoo establishment, with some of the best boerekos on the menu (forward booking is essential).

Behind the hotel is a well-tended memorial to the 11 Officers and men of the 11th Imperial Yeomanry who were killed in action on the 5th and 6th of February in 1902, during the Anglo Boer War.

We leave Cape Town on Saturday morning and head for the Tankwa Karoo. After a stop at the famous Tankwa Padstal we ride a stunning route via farm and dirt roads. We ride the beautiful Gannaga Pass and make a quick stop at Gannaga Lodge before heading to Middelpos.

Staying at the Middelpos Hotel definatley takes you back to the good old days of the small Karoo towns. The hotel will serve you with a mouth watering Karoo style meal.

After breakfast we make our way back to CT who knows where the road will take us wink

We stay at the Middelpos Hotel. Dinner and breakfast is included and you can be sure that we will treat you with some great  Karoo food. The hotel is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the friendly and hospitable locals.
