Did you know that the Karoo is rooted in Gondwanaland and lies on the largest plateau of its kind outside Asia. It covers almost 40 per cent of South Africa’s land surface and straddles four of the country’s nine provinces – the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Free State.
The Karoo is made out of many districts and the area is separated into various sub-regions by climate and biology. These are the massive Great Karoo (also known as the Nama Karoo); the Succulent Karoo (an ecological area including Namaqualand); the Tanqua Karoo, (between the Cederberg and the Roggeveld Escarpment with the Ceres Karoo at its southern section), the Worcester-Robertson Karoo, and the Klein Karoo.
Sutherland History
Sutherland was founded in 1855 as a church and market town to serve the area’s sheep farmers. The large Dutch Reformed church in the centre of Sutherland was built in 1899. During the Anglo Boer War the church was used as a fort by garrisoned British soldiers.
Merweville History
In 1897, with the support of the Dutch Reformed Church Minister in Beaufort West, Pieter van der Merwe, the local farmers appealed to the church authorities to create a new parish. The village of Merweville was born and named in honour of Minister van der Merwe.
We meet at Karoo 1 Farm Hotel just outside Touwsriver at around 09:30.
After we drop our bags at the hotel we take you on a loop of around 350km which includes some best spots in the Tankwa.
Highlights of the days ride is Baviaanshoek, Op die Berg, Katbakkies Pass, Tankwa Padstal, Pienaarspoort and awesome gravel travel and scenery
We take you on the road less traveled riding three forgotten roads and passes of “Die Moordenaars Karoo”.
The route provides beautiful views, awesome riding and lots of gates.
We stop at die Boorgat restuarant in Sutherland before we head back to Karoo 1.
Saturday evening we treat you to delicious Karoo cuisine whilst we share stories of our ride over some cold ones.
On Sunday after breakfast we make our way back home.
For the duration of this tour we stay at the Karoo 1 Farm Hotel.
Karoo 1 is the ultimate farm retreat with wide open skies. This oasis is located away from the bustle of the city, where you can be free to be you. It’s a space to get away, unwind, switch off and just relax making it the perfect location for our motorcycle tour.
Dinner and breakfast is included and you can be sure that we will treat you with some great Karoo food.
Intermediate skill level – The routes on this bike tour is comfortable and will be easy to navigate for the average rider. You must be comfortable riding at an average of 80 KM/H on dirt roads and have the ability to handle some loose stuff here and there. Roads in the area are mostly solid pack dirt roads and tracks but depending on traffic and when last it was graded there can be a little loose stuff here and there.
