Ready to explore the Cederberg..? Our Cederberg Explorer Tour will not only take you on a route but will also show you some of the attractions along the way. Our route will take us via Gydo Pass to the small settlement of Op die Berg. After we refueled we will set our sights on Cederberg Oasis where along the route you will see beautiful rock formations and drive over the stunning passes of Blinkberg and Grootrivierhoogte. We will stop at Cederberg Oasis where you can experience the hospitality of Gerrit and his team.
After lunch we will continue on our route but not before we have not shown you one of the most amazing caves in the area. If you have a Wild Card bring it with as the caves are within a national park. After our visit to the caves we will continue on our route to the small settlements of Eselbank and Wuppertal. The decent down the Eselbank Pass into Wuppertal is a steep one but now made easier as the tracks are filled with concrete.
Wuppertal is rich in history and has been a Moravian mission station since 1865, although its origins are actually Rhenish. The name “Wuppertal” derives from the Wupper River in Germany, from where two Rhineland missionaries, Theobald von Wurmb and Johan Gottlieb Leipoldt (grandfather of renowned writer C. Louis Leipoldt) arrived in the Cape in 1829 to spread the Word among the indigenous people.
The village today consists of an old thatched Church, a store, and terraces of neat thatched-roofed little cottages and a meandering street with water flowing in furrows. Excellent velskoen (known throughout the country) are made and tobacco is dried and worked into rolls (roltabak). The other main products of the area are dried fruit, dried beans and rooibos tea.
From Wuppertal we will continue on our route over the Kouberg en Hoek se Berg passes to our place of lodging, Traveler’s Rest. Traveller’s Rest Farm is 34 km from Clanwilliam on the Wuppertal road, over the spectacular Pakhuis Pass, in an area with ruggedly beautiful landscapes and fascinating rock formations. A place where you can truly enjoy the wide open spaces, the fascinating and surprisingly varied plant and animal life, the rich legacy of the San, inspiring night skies, and so much more. If you look carefully you might even see a Riel Dancer around the fire…
The evening we will treat you to a great meal typical of the Cederberg area.
